Here we go again! (hehehehe) Just signed on to do the music/entertainment/emceeing for a 25th wedding anniversary on January 8, 2006.
Basic info: I do NOT know the couple. Their children are planning this as a surprise and live quite a distance from where the party will be (in the town where I live). Am setting this thing up via e-mail and phone calls, so something is SURE to slip through the cracks.
My question? Any helpful hints for music? Things to do? Things to doublecheck? (hehehe) Sound like I'm a little leery? You betcha!
Any helpful hints and/or suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated!

Here are a few things that come to mind:
Coordinate very closely with the banquet facility. If the "children" are that far away, you're not going to be able to depend on them to tell you anything. If "entertainment" and "venue" are covered, then anything ELSE that can go wrong will be relatively minor (hopefully.)
Look up the popular songs from 1980 and make sure you have them. Bonus points if you can discreetly find out what their "special songs" were from their wedding reception.
I don't know if you're planning on doing anything with video, but I've seen wonderful things done with videos of collages of photographs, with voiceovers from close friends and siblings.
I usually introduce myself to everyone as they arrive, or later as I'm "schmoozing" my way around the room. I usually mention that I might call on people to share a fond memory or a funny story about the couple, that way people are already prepared if they get picked. Frequently I'll have so many volunteers I don't have to pick anyone. Just remind them that it's not a "roast". The story isn't funny if people are going to get upset about it, right?
Twenty-five years of marriage means they're probably MY age or older, and who knows how old some of the guests might be, or what health problems might be exacerbated by the celebrating? Better to be safe than sorry. Get the phone numbers for the local ambulance, police, etc., and have them handy in case of a medical emergency. Make sure you have the street address of the facility, also, in case you have to give it to the emergency dispatcher.
Anniversaries are typically pretty easy events to do, so don't stress TOO much. Good luck! |

If you can, find out who is helping them plan the event. Probably aunts, uncles & grandparents. Contact those people.
Probably nobody but the couple will be able to tell you the wedding song, so make sure there is an internet connection at the venue so if needed, you can download it once you finally find out what it is. |

I guess that's good customer service......but I would rather be dealing with the party at hand than trying to D/L a song on site.
I've rarely been caught emptyhanded, with over 10,000 songs in my on-site library, I'll have their wedding song. (Chances are its "Endless Love" by Diana Ross/Lionel Richie.....LOL) |

Maybe I didn't fully explain. We're talking about a surprise party. It would be kinda hard to ask the anniversary couple without spoiling the surprise.... |
