I like the new Michael Bauble stuff, where he takes classic rock songs and -Sinatra's them- what is the jazz equal to this? Nice jazz set to 70's and 80's titles. I want some recognizable tracks that won't put people to sleep. Any ideas???

My favorite jazz music is by Vince Guaraldi. People will recognize the music, but not remember where they've heard it, except a few songs are dead giveaways that everyone knows like "Linus and Lucy".

I've had good luck with a French artist named St. Germain. Most of his stuff is jazzy, but some of it is a strange jazz/techno fusion, which I know sounds weird, but he makes it work. There are one or two pieces that are too "out there", but the rest are great! There's also a few songs displaying a heavy latin influence. I've gotten a lot of compliments from people on it.

Check out "Hidden Beach" - Unwrapped. There are three Cds out. They are done by Mike Phillips and a host of friends. Very contemporary. They oft times take samples from Rap or hip-hop and use it in a jazz track (thus the name "Unwrapped" I presume). I use them frequently for cocktail or dinner music.

I also agree that St. Germain is excellent as Dokai mentioned. You can't go wrong with either one.

Thanks to 2 people mentioning I had them flip to Prime Cuts, I got 10 of the Prime Cuts Smooth Jazz discs and bought the other 4. There is some outstanding stuff on that series. But, you have to be a subscriber. There are some old pop titles set to jazz by current jazz artists.

As for your original post, Michael Buble' has done several recording of pop standards as you mentioned. Also, the Bette Midler disc of Rosemary Clooney songs is good. On the other hand, The Rod Stewart Songbooks are mainly ballads. Check out some of the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

Don't laugh, but didn't Babby Manilow do a CD of Big Band and Swing?

Right now I'm particularly fond of Jack Johnson and Norah Jones

Smooth jazz would include Dave Koz, Boney James, Grover Washington Jr, and David Sanborn.

Death to Kenny G!!! (LOL....I just purchased "Breathless" for 99 cents)
