|
|
Remember last week when their server "hiccuped" and they lost a bunch of data?
Some DJs lost their entire web sites.
Gigbuilder was spared ---supposedly.
I say "supposedly" because my Saturday wedding/reception had no songs listed when I went to print out my song list on Friday.
Needless to say, it was very hard for me to call the bride & groom on Friday and tell them "WeDJ dumped your song list......I'm really sorry!"
HERE'S WHAT I DID FOR THEM:
1) arrived THREE HOURS before the wedding ceremony. my normal arrival time is 2 hours.
2) brought my printed song lists so they could pass the list around and get some requests generated. Most of the songs they circled were the same ones they had on their online music list (the one WeDJ lost!)
3) gave them a wireless upgrade for the ceremony (Sennheiser EW-122 G2 lapel mic)
4) threw in free dance lighting
The end result?
MY BEST PARTY EVER.
free of the constraints of a 40-song "Must Play/Should Play" list......I was able to mix up a great set of hip hop, Rnb, Disco, Rock, 80's and oldies for the crowd.
B/G still got their favorites, but I was able to read their crowd and make everyone jump, even the grandmas.
(Note that if I had been stuck with the original list, I probably wouldn't have been able to do as good of a job...)
Thanks WeDJ .....for losing my song list!
(Please don't do it again!!!) |

There ya go.... "makin' lemonade" again!
____________
I got that email from WeDJ as well -- apparently their backup system only worked on some of their websites.
Now I need to go and check my music database. :?
I hope they find a way to restore the data. I have enough time (fortunately) to recover from any lost music lists.
BUT, I don't know how I'd recover from lost client data! |

Howdy,
Man, I learn so much from this site. I generally get some songs that the Bride and Groom want to hear, but I usually mix from scratch at each event. I don't pre-program my music, but I do load all the B&G's requests into a seperate folder so I can keep track of what has, and what needs to be played. I will make an exception: If the event is over 4 hours of mixing, then I'll ask for more info.

| I sort-of mix on the fly, as in I don't pre-program a set list of songs either. But, I actually do the song list the old fassion way, simply written on a piece of paper, and I pick and choose songs from the list and queue them up, so if requests come in, it's easy to just slide them in without worying about messing up a pre-programmed set. |

We mix on the fly -- we use the 'work area' (OTS) for the 'Standards - Bride/Groom, Bride/Father, Bouquet/Garter etc -- but pick a previous event that closely resembles and mix from there, with OTS, adding a request is as fast as your typing skills.
We keep the vital info - Names / Standard Dance List on our 'agreement' paperwork -- ensures that we get there w/ a paper listing of their info. |

Great to hear everything worked out for you. As you choose to limit your time investment and save your clients some cash by not doing a face-to-face planning meeting for all events (nothing wrong with that!) obviously you ran into the "worst case" scenario and recovered well.
I'm not sure that I would have thrown in a ton of freebies like you did, but I'm sure the client appreciated the effort to make good.
Personally I choose to do a face-to-face planning meeting with all receptions so unless the outage happens a month before the event, I will have a hard copy of the request list, timeline, and introductions already in hand. In the event there was an outage I'd just wind up spending another half hour or so during the meeting to regather that info.
I also seem to buck the trend of preprogramming. This is something I always do, even though I've never had a play log and an initial list look identical. It's there as a stress reducer having a night already laid out. That way I can feel comfortable stepping away from the booth from time to time. As requests roll in I bump out similar tempos and styles to make it reflect the mood of the guests. |
