Has anyone started inviting brides, corporate party planners, etc. to the Public Board?

I'm thinking of adding a link on my website and including it in the information packet when I start adding several new pages. We're still in beta test mode and CJ has his hands full (rattles, pacifiers, etc.) Are we ready to discuss topics with the public?

And another question... do we want to?

Is the DJGold public forum a good idea, or a waste of time?

Originally, I imagined people who used the search engine might have questions they could post on the public forum, which could then be answered by any of our members. But, is that reasonable? Would they really want to do that? Hmmm...
The other alternative is to make DJGold exclusive to Pro Mobile DJ's.

There is actually two sides to this coin...

1st, I think it would be good for our future clients to be able to ask questions to the pro's here. They could possibly get more educated as to what REALLY is involved in planning a professional DJ and their true value...

OTOH ...

A client may ask a question and 20 DJ's give different answers to their question because every DJ handles some situations differently and have different opinions as to how to handle certain situations which will in turn confuse the client even more....

so.. it's really a toss up... could help or could hurt ....

All of the other bbs' are exclusive to disc jockeys. Why be of the same mold?

It's the least used feature of this site and it would be the single-most important resource out there for us to learn about our clients (generally-speaking) and for them to learn about the field of mobile entertainment.

It would be the hardest to keep the civility on, to keep the level of professionalism but the pro's would most certainly outweigh the con's. With some of the associations' work and getting proper representation on bridal chat boards, etc. we are certainly going in the right direction. Utilizing an asset like this could do a lot of good.

Quite honestly, there's been a few boards that have popped up recently and I've visited and then left because it didn't pull me in. This unique part of the board sets this site apart from the rest. It pulled me in.

Should we use it? In my opinion, yes of course we should.

Audio Pulse, if someone were to get 20 different answers from as many disc jockeys, it'll show how unique our businesses truly are.

Just to throw a couple of names out there in a hypothical situation, a bride asks about formalities and she gets a couple of answers from California.

Obviously, DJMC and Randy Bartlett are going to have their own way of doing things. Neither one would be "wrong" for explaining how they conduct themselves. A bride would find it easy to decide which style is "wrong" for her particular reception. Not a bad situation.

I hope neither Matt or Randy gets upset that they were picked for this demonstration. Both have been fairly public with their opinions and experiences. If you're reading this, thanks guys!

My post above might have seemed like I was against it more than for....

When in reality, I am all for it.. I was just pointing out the possibilty of conflicts that may occure.. BUT.. as we are all PROFESSIONALS here, I believe or hope we as Professionals will not post conflicts (argueing, saying I'm right, your wrong) or bashes towards the other DJs posts that we disagree with or have a different view of... ya know, the ego thing...

I'm hoping we are all professional enough to not do that in front of a potential client...

I know of a few other DJ forums that this may happen and get out of hand if they were to do this (public invitation)...

Dave I would have to agree with you that at some of the other sites, it would hurt the integrity of mobile entertainers.

Do you think we're ready for a few brides? Do you think it would be OK if I added a blurb in my printed materials to come her to "ask the professionals"?

In general, I believe that public access to read the forums is ok. It can add a sense of "ok-ness" to possible customers/clients that happen upon the site or are directed here.

Also, with your search engine results that you have arranged, CJ, it would be more "open" to the person that found the site through an internet search.

Another effect is the happenstance that a viewer will see "Oh look, he's in Joplin" can, though more remote, add a gig or two.

Should something really get out of hand, well, that's what you have moderators (or yourself) for.

I'm for an open door policy.

I tried it on my board and I had one there. I went and did the gig and the bride was "less than enthused" by my services to put it midly. It wasn't my board she was upset about it was about something that happened at the gig which I believe wasn't entirely my fault.
At the gig the venue owner was a pompous fool and he caused me to screw up an introduction by his antics. He almost knocked over a speaker stand and the cable came out. Well, needless to say I got the blame for it. I was dragged through the mud on another board about this bride's cruddy music selection, but I had to play this music. I couldn't take the blame for it if I was limited in what I could play. If the venue owner wasn't carrying on beside me in a dangerous manner, I would not have been distracted and would not have screwed up the introduction and the whole thing would have went off without a hitch. The Bride had wanted to to play a form of music called "Crunk" which in my opinion is junk.
I don't normally play it, never advertised that I play it, told her specifically I don't play it, but the the girl didn't listen and was upset with me at the end of the night. I still was retained for an extra hour and recieved my first tip that night too.
Oh, well. You live and learn.

If we invite the general public to post on the general public forums, I think they should be put at the top of the list, and then the "DJ only" forums further down.

Relating to DJ Iron Mike's story, when ever someone requests an "odd" selection, I always make some type of announcement that lets people know it was a special request and not just something strange I decided to play of my own accord.

To clarify: I don't think any unregistered person should post. I thought it was about viewing the forums. (Logan's post made me think I might have not expressed myself properly in my post).

A seperate, registered viewer only section would always be advisable in case there is something that public viewing might not be appropriate.

yeah, public forums still require registering to post, but openly viewable to non registered general public. But the DJ only forums be not viewable (or postable) unless registered as a DJ too.

As you guys may have noticed, the "Public" forums are missing from the bottom of the Forum Index.

I took them off for now, since they're not being used... but it doesn't mean we can't create a public forum!
I was just thinking that perhaps I should set up a separate forum with multiple areas if we decide that we do want to "host" the public in a "Ask-the-DJ" type of setup.
They wouldn't be able to see everything we have in our Professional Mobile DJ forum -- they would be on a separate site and we would go to them.

In the meantime, we should certainly continue to build our site for Pro Mobile DJ's.
Also, right now most of the forums are viewable when not logged in -- that's to help search engines, and to allow DJ's to see what's going on before registering. (You do have to be registered and logged in to post.)

If you guys think that's too public and compromises our privacy then let me know. We could also set up some forums to be member-only viewable if that would help... or if you think they should all be member-only then let me know and I'll find another way of attracting the search engines.

I can't think of a reason why we would want to exclude anyone from looking at the 'private' section. After all, if they were determined, they could BS their way thru the registration process so they could read it. Additionally, since the nature of most of the posts are truly "DJs helping DJs", they may get a better understanding of what we do. Maybe they will realize that we do more than "just push buttons".

You're quite right, this board could certainly serve to shed a good light on what we really do as Professional Mobile DJ's.

My only concern was that perhaps some of the members might want a few of their conversations to be kept private... or at least hidden from the masses. I guess that's what PM's are for, but if someone wants to keep some or all of the posts private, let me know!

Not that we have anything to hide, but do you think that anyone out there should be able to read the posts?
If there are DJ's out there then they can join in as a member.
But do we want B&G to look in ?
I think in the general post part we should have a ----How to
Something that will help them out and it will make them want to read on and to come back.
Just my .02
