I was all set up for Saturday's wedding reception. We were on a stage in an old ballroom. The venue staff comes around just before the guests arrive and place a row of candles across the front of the stage, including one directly in front of my 18" JBL powered sub (less than a foot away). I joke with the server who was lighting the candles - "Is this a test for me? If the candle goes out, does that mean the music is too loud?" Then I got to thinking. Would the sub actually move enough air to extinguish the candle? There are candles on either side to serve as a control. I decided to watch and see what happened.
Did it go out or stay lit? What do you think? We'll be back with the results right after this word from our sponsor... :hahaha: |

| If it were my subs in an outdoor setting, the candle would easily be blown out. If indoor, you may not need to turn it up loud enough to blow it out. If it didn't actually blow out, I bet for sure the flame danced around quite a bit. It would also depend if the candle was in front of the driver or the port (assuming your subs are ported). |

| Indoor reception. Candle was appx. 8" tall, directly centered in front of the driver. OK, not your subs, but one JBL JRX118SP which has 2 ports at the lower corners of the cabinet. |

If it were ME........I would have declined the use of flammable objects so close to my equipment.
Same thing with items containing H20.......like flower vases. |

I'm betting that while you COULD have blown it out, you didn't have to get that loud. I agree with Bartman - I bet that flame danced A LOT!
DJMC - If you didn't buy junk, you wouldn't have to worry so much. :D |

The candle was lit during cocktail hour when the volume was low. The first time we cranked it up was during the Grand Entrance The candle .......... immediatly went out. It was relit and stayed lit through the dinner hour (again at low volume) We started dancing (at normal dance volume) and the candle immediatly went out again. All of the other (control) candles stayed lit the entire time.
Myth - CONFIRMED!
By the way Matt--- welcome back! We missed you. But please explain why a DJ should have a problem with a candle or a vase of flowers placed near the equipment? I could understand it if it being there presented some kind of hazard, but it didn't. It was simply part of the decor that my client wanted. Who am I to tell them they can't put it there? If they tried to put it on top of the sub, now we have an issue. |

One of my subs did catch on fire once, but it wasn't because of a candle near it. There was a defect in the tensile lead and it came loose from the cone and caused an electrical arc. It burst into flames rather quickly. Amp wasn't hurt any, and the cabinet was unharmed too. And yes, replaced the speaker basket under warranty.
And while I don't purposely like to get my speakers wet, they have survived a pouring rain while I was quickly getting them off the football field in ankle-deep water (rain came down so hard a fast that the field flooded almost instantly). I let them dry out overnight, then tested them out the next day, and they performed like nothing ever happened to them. |
