I'm looking for Dj's to spin on cruise ships. Music format is top 40.

Imagine doing a really hip wedding. Thats what DJing on a cruise ship is like.

For more info email me: rnadigel@gmail.com

Cheers Rob

Great.......spinning on a floating boat......where diseases like Legionaires Disease bacteria still have outbreaks on a regular basis.

A hip wedding? Yeah, right.....you get to see wrinkled geezers who get to dance with "ringers" (lovely ladies who are given free passage in exchange for this pleasure....)

Not to mention the constant barrage of buffet food.
Imagine having to eat "hotel food" or 'wedding food' for several weeks on end....

Matt -

Don't be so negative.

A - Legionaires Disease originated at a land hotel, not a cruise.

B - Regular outbreaks? They are actually rare, but newsworthy. That's why it seem slike they occur often.

C - If it's a cruise ship, and not merely a day trip type cruise, it operates in a para-military pecking order. I.E. The DJ is ranked as an officer, somewhere below actual bridge officers, but above those that do the dirty work. As such, the DJ is afforded privelages, not offered to most of the crew. The DJ's cabin is on part with the other officer cabins, almost as good as the bottom-rung guest cabins.

D - As a member of the crew, the DJ has access to all areas. Therefore, like the wait staff, he can eat in the kitchen during a wedding. Other meals he eats with the other officers or crew.

I know all this because a friend of mine was a cruise DJ for 2 years. He got tired of playing Hands Up 6 nights a week and became a bartender and stayed on board another 4 years.

It's a GREAT opportunity for a DJ that doesn't have any bookings too far in the future.

The pay isn't great, but considering you're living rent free, free food and free uniform. it's not a bad deal AT ALL.

I'd consider being a cruise DJ if I was younger and not so "settled down/stuck in my ways".

Yeah.....even I was one of those DJs who dreamed about spinning on cruise ships......when I was "young & stoopid."

I've always wondered what level of "freedom" a cruise ship DJ would have. If they are allowed to co-mingle with the passengers (especially the female ones), I could see where it would be a great job for a DJ to have.. er, I mean for an unmarried DJ! Lots of opportunity to (you know) let's say to "meet interesting people".

I know that the regular crew members are confined to the crew area and are not permitted to socialize with passengers, but I have seen officers, Cruise directors staff, photographers, entertainers etc. eating and hanging out on the regular decks when they are off duty. I'm thinking that DJ's may fall into this category.

It would seem that with all the DJ's that visit this board that someone would have worked on a cruise ship at some point.

I'll also say that I have been on a half dozen cruises but have never been overly impressed with any of the DJ's I saw. Pretty ordinary. The equipment however, is very impressive. Here's a photo I took a couple years ago of the DJ booth on a Carnival ship. Sound, lights and video like you'd see in a first class nightclub.

I suspect that cruise ship DJs are subject to at least some level of programming.

I wonder how structured the programming may be for the DJ? Like, do they have a set songlist and you must play them in listed order etc., basically be a human jukebox with occasionall witty comments between songs, or does the DJ bring all the music and mix totally at will?

A good friend of mine was a cruise ship DJ for a couple of years. He loved it. He was expected to mingle with and schmooze the guests. Programming wise, the only thing he mentioned was having to include quite a bit of latin (rumba, samba, etc.) in his shows. He also mentioned the generous equipment budget. All in all, it sounds like a sweet gig for a single guy or gal!
