What you would buy if you were to get 8 fixtures for uplighting. I'm seeking suggestions for the all around best options, keeping the cost per fixture around $100 - $300 each.
What are the + /- pluses and minuses of going with various options ranging from Par 46 pinspots (change the gel when I want a different color, not much heat), Par 38 or 56 (change the gel or bulb wattage when needed, lots of heat) or LED Colorstrip, Rain 56, etc.
Seeking ease of setup and effectiveness too. Fixtures will be used in various banquet venues, thus the typical settings us DJs face. |

| I'd go with LED color-changers sized for the amount of light you're trying to produce. There are many from Chauvet and ADJ that meet your price criteria, and there's a lot to be said for low power draw and not having to buy gels to change colors. Not to mention that they can change color on the fly, and you don't have to worry about bulb life for a LOOOOONG time. |

| The only concern I have is how bright are the LED fixtures compared to traditional Par can lights? It would be easier to judge if some kind of measurement, like Lumens, were indicated so a comparison can be made. |

Bartman,
That's very hard to do since they produce color in exactly opposite ways.
Traditional Par cans use media which subtract unwanted color from white leaving one the desired color. Saturated colors will have transmission rates as low as 6%. LED's on the other hand add color to create color. |

I understand that part, but at least a comparison for unfiltered traditional par can vs. all LEDs on for the LED fixture. When the LED fixture say goes straight red, only the red LEDs are on, which is I'm assuming about 1/3 of all the LEDs in the fixture, so in effect, you've at least lost 66% of total light output to begin with. In comparing color settings, perhaps the only way is to simply see it for yourself.
There are other options still... the color spot or color wash moving head type lights that use an MSD "discharge" bulb put out much more light per watt than conventional par can bulbs, but they are hecka expensive. |
