Between my day job, the DJ business, and the DJ Manager software, I've started feeling burned out. And I've recently gotten new responsibilities (and related opportunities) added to my day job which sometimes requires overtime. At 21 I could do all this, but at 41 it's too much. For my sanity, something has to go. The day job pays well, and the DJ business isn't even close to grossing the nearly $400,000 that it would take to replace my day job salary and benefits. So I'm closing down the DJ business (and for liability reasons, the DJ Manager software as well). Roberta and I are looking forward to actually using our vacation time for a real vacation instead of DJ conferences for the first time in nearly 11 years. I'm also forward to having a little more time to relax.

I have accumulated quite a lot of equipment and books over the years. Sound systems, karaoke, lighting, video projection, DJ Power hardware and software, games, props, and educational resources. If you're interested in buying any of it, please PM or email me with your email address and I'll email you an Excel spreadsheet that list everything I have.

Thanks,

Wow... that's a pretty impressive day job ($$$) -- what do you do?

I'm a software engineer. Rule of thumb is gross revenue needs to be 3 times salary to cover loss of salary, benefits, other half of fica/medicare tax and to also cover business expenses.

That "three times" rule is almost spot-on, in my experience.

You might want to hold on to the music, though - lots of DJs find themselves coming "out of retirement" after a year or two. And think of all the shiny new equipment you'll be able to buy then! :D

Best of luck with your plans!

Actually Steve, there are a couple of things in your list I'd like to get ahold of... I'll send you a PM/Email with the inquiry.

Thanks,

Good luck with your new life outside of DJing!

I've pretty much retired from the biz myself . . .

Only did two gigs last year and have one scheduled for July . . . that's all I've got on the books!

I have no plans on getting rid of my gear, though . . .

When I get tired of my day job (which is fast approaching) . . . I may get back into the swing of things DJ!

You could always set up DJ Manager Software (www.djmgr.com), as a open source free project.

Us poor DJ's would be eternally grateful if you did.
