I have a Bride to be who would like to have "Celtic" music played during the cocktail hour. I'm not really sure what to use for this. The only idea I have is to use the Celtic Women CD (From a PBS special)... otherwise I am pretty clueless here. (..and I'm of Irish descent too.. I'm so ashamed!) :redfrown:
Any ideas? Suggestions? Anyone? Help? |

| I would think Enya would qualify too, and be somewhat recognizable. |

| The "Waking Ned Devine" soundtrack has some decent songs on it. |

| Did she give you any other guidance, or any thoughts on what she considers celtic music? Most people hear the word "celtic" and think "bagpipes". |

If you have time, check out this place. http://www.theirishgifthouse.com/en-us/dept_526.html
I have a personal fondness Irish Folk, and soft Celtic music. These people seem to have a fine selection.

Are you looking for songs, artists, specific CD's or any combination? I do a lot of Irish get-togethers and have a pretty wide collection from new-age to traditional to Irish Punk.
I can point you to a couple CD's from Amazon that I have picked up that have great cocktail hour feel:
Celtic Music for Flute & Whistle: http://www.amazon.com/Gentle-Breeze-Celtic-Music-Whistle/dp/B000009DQ1/sr=1-10/qid=1171564893/ref=sr_1_10/105-4726685-5905226?ie=UTF8&s=music
Celtic Soul: http://www.amazon.com/Celtic-Soul-Various-Artists/dp/B00004LML8/sr=8-11/qid=1171564100/ref=pd_bbs_sr_11/105-4726685-5905226?ie=UTF8&s=music
Celtic Magic - Eleven Irish Instrumentals: http://www.amazon.com/Celtic-Magic-Eleven-Irish-Instrumentals/dp/B000003OD9/sr=1-3/qid=1171564893/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/105-4726685-5905226?ie=UTF8&s=music
Celtic Odyssey: http://www.amazon.com/Celtic-Odyssey-Northern-Lights/dp/B000005P56/ref=pd_rhf_f_2/105-4726685-5905226
As always, I'd suggest clarifying the client's request and or get specific examples if possible(being through makes you look better and more on top of things as well). Some people will accept anything new-age with a flute or harp as Celtic, and others will be quite dissatisfied if you try to substitute faux Celtic when they expect something authentic. These CD's have a little of both.
If you get a chance, look into Altan, Clannad, and Capercaillie as well. |

Thanks, Dave. I actually met with the clients last night and asked that very question. It turns out that they don't have anything really specific in mind, just something with an "Irish feel" (NO bagpipes! LOL). We agreed that we would use a mix of Irish jig medleys, reels and a few ballads tossed in for good measure. We are even doing their Grande Entrance to McNamara's Band and the Irish Washerwoman - cool eh?
I did check out the CDs you suggested and ordered them too! They're a bit different than what I already have, so they will certainly add to the mix. I appreciate the assistance.
This is gonna be a fun wedding! |

Good luck with that wedding... we Irish sure enjoy a good party! I'm sure they'll be pleased.
I've got a Corned Beef Fundraiser dinner this Saturday for the local Irish society where I'll be playing plenty of Celtic tunes. I'm just hoping I don't cause a riot when we change gears to getting people out on the floor.
It's hard to load the floor with jigs and reels in a mixed crowd, but everyone will get on the floor for the Isley Brothers. |
