|
| i did a search on topics but the results were way too random. the problem is... i have a bunch of song in my i-tunes folder but burning them in i-tunes is a big hassle. is there a program that will allow me better control of my music? i love i-tunes but this beats me down. |

as far as I know, there is nothing that will convert protected files to a different format. Have you tryed goolging??
slick new stuff comes out all the time so I wouldn't be surprised if something will do the trick.
How many songs do need to burn, by the way? I ask because if you burn a MP3 format disc using Roxio Toast you can put near a hundred songs on one CD, plus then you have backups. |

Here's a workaround...but it will take going back to a version of iTunes prior to 6.0.
1) Go to http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.htm and download, for example,
version 5.0.1. (Personally, I use version 4.7. I turned off the nag box to upgrade to 7.0. (Ya know, click do not ask me again)
2) With an older version of iTunes installed, go to http://hymn-project.org/jhymndoc/#downloads and download the jhymn version 0.9.2 for Windows.
There are some things you'll need to check off and personalize in jhymn, but this will circumvent having to burn to CD first. |

john, i just updated a few weeks ago to 7 i believe....so....
there is a program i came across called "tunebite". i d/l the trail version off zdnet.com . it only allows 30 sec rips in the trail version but seems to do the job. the full version is just $20. i update my "texas country" frequently and i-tunes is way to controlling over tunes i bought and own!!!
as you might imagine... rather than having 4-5 cd's of texas country, i'd rather make 1 mp3 disc that has it all. |

wow! i just tried the trail version and what it does is actualy play the song (at 2-4x) and dub the recordings like the dual cassette players used to on high speed dub. talk about a flashback!
if you try it i suggest ripping at 2x to assure clean audio. 4x is showing a little loss in quality (troubleshoot said slow the rip speed) |

Late last week I tried to buy a few tunes that I needed for a wedding this past weekend. I was using iTunes 4.x and it insisted that I upgrade to iTunes 7 before it would let me purchase anything. jhymn was ineffective on the files that I bought.
That was probably the last time I will use iTunes. |

i-tunes has saved me in many a bind. Bryan try this program out (at least the trail vers.) on the settings do 1x and volume at 70%. 1x is slow but what i did was dump all my m4p in this program and let it go to work while i slept. when i awoke .... MP3'S !!!!! |

That is cool you found a workaround david, its just a bummer that it is lowering the sound quality.
Has anyone tried MP3.com to see what format they sell their songs at? |

Was a good suggestion on Tunebite too. That is an alternative method besides jhymn.
Technically, Tunebite doesn't strip the DRM, just re-records the file as it plays. 2x for iTunes, 4x for Napst |

What we really need here is a program that will create a "fake" CD-Rom Drive on the hard drive so that you can burn your i-tunes (and other types of) songs to it, then rip them to any format you want.
I tried looking for a program that would do this about 6 months ago, but didn't find anything that would work reliably. Has anyone found anything recently? |

| David: I got the trial version of tunebite this morning, and from my initial experiments it looks like it will do. Thanks for the tip! :D |

Sounds like that's doing what you want without the bother of creating a fake CD drive. jwg wrote: Was a good suggestion on Tunebite too. That is an alternative method besides jhymn.

| Not sure if Tunebite is legal or not. Jury may be out on that. Have seen alot of chatter about it on the net as the way to convert WMA to MP3. Would still burn to CD any WMA tracks that are purchased just in case. |

The good thing about Napster is if you use PCDJ FX or Red VRM, it WILL play the protected WMA files.
The files from iTunes, in their native form, are limited to Megaseg and a couple other programs.
Tunebite appears to be the method of choice with iTunes to convert unless you get an older version of iTunes prior to 6.0. Then, jhymn should work.
It doesn't appear that there has been an update to jhymn in awhile.
Maybe the developer has given up, dunno. |

I did read about the above mentioned programs... but it sounds like there might be some loss of quality?
If it's all digital, then technically you wouldn't have any loss of quality if you were able to directly translate the information from one format to another. BUT, if you're playing back at "double speed" or faster, is the "listening" program recording every bit of the info, or is there some loss?
I do know that all of these music companies allow for full-quality burning of the song to CD, and that this burning can be done at high speed without quality loss.
If I can find a program that will work with iTunes or the other services, I'll let you know. |

Here's a program that will allow you to rip to your hard drive at full quality. You can then convert to any format you want, or keep the original CD quality files -- your choice.
It was recommended here:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=88418
The program is "Original CD Emulator", and can be tried out for free. Purchase price is $35. You can read about it and download it here:
