Hi everybody,

Anyone using the one space Rane MP4 mixer ? I don't have one but I'm really thinking about getting one to cut down on the weight, and size, of my rack.

What do you like about it? how's the sound? anything you DON'T like or wish it had ?

Any replies welcome. Thanks. :)

The MP4 is a great tool for several applications. I've worked mine to death with no problems. The reason I consider it a tool for different applications is that I am also into the art of dj'n (mixing, scratchin, stunts). The MP4 has it's limits in this area, however if you are not concerned with that it will serve well for weddings and mobile gigs.

The sound quality is excellent and I really like the recording feature. For example you can record the ceremony, toast, etc.... If you are into mixing you can record your sets as well. It's a sweet piece!

Right now the only feature issue I have is there is no auto crossfade. However, It's in the works and will be released in the near future.

Holla at me if you have any more questions.

BTW... there is an auto mode that will play songs back to back. However, auto crossfade will be a great feature for us mobiles during the cocktail or dinner portion of an event.

Is the auto mode in the MP4 with the built-in soundcards? Or, are you talking about DJ software programs?

Using auto mode with the MP4 is actually using auto mode in Serato Scratch Live software. The SSL software along with the MP4 also has fader start, which is nice.

Thanks Supernatural !

I would be using it for mostly weddings and other private parties, no scratchin' or even hot mixin'. Is this "auto cross fade" going to work with CDs or MP3 only?

The thing I'm not to cool on is that it's got only one mic input. I suppose it's not that big a deal but I like to use a headphone wireless AND a handheld on the other channel. Also, there's minimal onboard EQ.

I've downloaded their manual for it and RANE recommends that it be used with a graphic freq. EQ., have you noticed it having a "flat" sound ?

Thanks again. Anyone else? :)

I have the Rane MP2, which is very similar to the MP4 but doesn't have the internal soundcard function. Anyway, Rane recommends two mixers, the Rane MLM-82 and the MLM-42, which are recommended for use with the MP2 if you need more mic inputs. The MLM-82 provides an additional four mic inputs and four stereo inputs, with the MLM-42 providing four channels which can be used for four mics or two stereo sources.

I've been using an MLM-82a to augment my MP2 for a number of years and have been very happy with it. One of the additional features it provides is the ability to change a stereo input to mono by depressing a switch on the front panel. Very handy in instances when mono is needed!

@ djwak59... I also rarely use the MP4 as the sole mixer, only when I need a super compact system for a river boat gig or ceremony. Mostly, I incorporate it with my existing systems. Meaning, I use it with my main dj mixers that have 8 channels using two channels for the MP4 and using the mic inputs from the main dj mixer.

When using the MP4 by itself the sound is good and has enough onboard EQ control. Although, if you are thinking to use it all the time, I would get an EQ.

Auto crossfade will only be for music on your hard drive.

@ dokai.... yeah man, the MLM42 has saved the day a few times when I found out several people were going to sing at a ceremony or reception.
Also, the nice thing about using SSL with the MP4 is there is now a mono switch in the software.

Also, you can get some solid mix's done with the MP4 and SSL. You can slam mix with the fader or use the mouse pad and hot keys on your lappy.
