I think I just found a limit in PCDJ. I loaded lots of songs into the case player. Not all of them loaded. The limit is about 10,000. After that you need to make a new file to accomodate the rest.

Does this cause a problem?

(I'm not a PCDJ user)

We run OTS -- No limit - -we're @ 13,000 and growing -- I keep my music in 1 main folder w/ many subfolders -- but that is for ease of updating multiple computers, ots will look across drives/folders etc. for music.

Yes because it doesn't load all my songs. I've had to break down the category in order to get them to all load.

I have well over 10,000 tracks loaded in PCDJ Red vrm but they were divided into a number of different sub folders (but one main "music" file). I have been able to run it with everything open at once with no problems. Perhaps having the file structure is the difference?

Are you talking one of the main players (1 or 2) or the old caseplayer in PCDJ Red 5.2? The caseplayer, from what I've seen, was designed to preview a track. Or, to be used as a possible 3rd player. You can't load a waitlist into the case player.

What other factors do you have? Ram, performance settings, processor, how many files in each folder and sub-folder etc. Or, just one main music folder?

I'm talking about Red 5.2 in the regular caseplayer. I didn't have it broken down to sub folders yet, I do now because I like to just turn it on and let it play here at the house. Beats XM in that way. I had about 80 songs that wouldn't load from the W's to the Z's . I think Jack might be on to it though.

I run PCDJ off a dedicated computer with two seperate 400gig hard drives........I am good friends with someone who builds PCDJ systems and has traveled for the company showcasing it as well as troubleshooting it. He recently told me that I should divide my recordcase into categories just like in a cd case (country, oldies, disco, etc) and store my music accordingly.........here's the important part.........you can only put 1000 songs in any given category...if you have more than 1,000 of any category, break it up again.........example.......instead of 1,500 songs in "country" , make a "country a-m" and "country n-z" and break up the listings that way......hope that helps...............if you don't do this pcdj will start to have problems and eventually cause loading errors at startup and erase your recordcase.........

It's not a thousand, it's ten thousand. That's how I've been running it.
One category had over ten thousand songs. It had been working fine until It just got too many. So here is what i did. I looked at the file by determining how many songs were in the file. I divided it by two, stuck the first half into one folder and the second half into another. I ran PCDJ groups on it and viola, there were all the songs.

yes, you can put as many songs as you want in a category like you did with the 10,000, I currently use PCDJ with FX & Karaoke for the past 3 years........what I'm saying is that if any given recordcase category has over 1,000 songs in it, here's what will [i]eventually happen and why.....everytime you boot up PCDJ, a large part of the file registry that takes place concerns the music loading, obviously........if it reads large music files (i.e. over 1,000 songs) it makes it harder for the rest of the pcdj system files to load in the proper sequence to make everything run smoothly........every time PCDJ is booted up, it will start in a different sequence every time, and over time "forget" it's own proper sequence for loading, and may skip important file paths, which eventually leads to frozen screens, skipping songs , error load codes for songs, and worst of all: a button that comes up saying the program did not load properly and is not responding........the ONLY way to correct this is to hit "yes" if it asks you if you want to shut it down for being non-responsive.....when you do, it reverts to the very initial settings from the very first time you put PCDJ on your system, and all of the songs in your pcdj aren't recognized in the recordase and have to be re-loaded........I've seen it happen........it is a great and very reliable system, and it may not happen to DJ's who don't know for years, but during a first dance or father daughter dance sure would be a crappy place to find that out.

The 1,000 song issue is the reason I scrapped that software. When you get more than 1,000 items in a case, PCDJ tends to get very laggy when searching and browsing the library. IMO that is unacceptable.

I don't recall it losing songs over 10,000 though. I'm pretty sure I had 13,000 songs or so in my library at the time I was using it.

I'm REALLY hoping the new VJ software doesn't inherit that problem. It's actually the first product that will actually do what I'm looking to do with my shows.

I've been operating PCDJ FX for about a year now and have had a good experience so far. I have tried free trial version of OTS turntables and found that to be an interesting program, especially the turntable GUI.
As for the limit on the PCDJ, as stated by other posters on the board, simply structure your file architecture to more groups,ie. music genre, year, or artist name. It seems to work out fine. I am up to just over 11,000 songs in the record case thus far.

I've been running OTS for over three years - never had a song missing, and I have over 23,000 tunes loaded on one 250 gig hard drive. They were ripped at 320 kbs.

Unless you want the frills, the $99 package does the job! I have two plus the Pro Unit ($299.95). Each package comes with the same ripper.

I have used Red, Red VRM and FX and I've had well over 3000-4000 in some folders and never had a problem...the program didn't slow down, get laggy, freeze, etc. In fact, in 4+ years of using PCDJ products I've never had it crash during an event.

Ok,
First off thank you for using PCDJ. I want to clear up some confusion regarding the limitations of the recordcase in both the 5.2 (old) and 7.3

We'll start with the 5.2:
This version of PCDJ utilized ini files which are glorified txt files. Once one of these files starts to get large funky things start happening. This is why we suggest that you limit the total number of tracks per group to around 3,000. From there you can have as many of those groups as you want. My personal collection spans 2.4 terabytes of drive space. I have easily loaded 100,000 tracks into the Red 5.2 in the past.

There are free utilities available to help you break down your music library based on the way you have the music sorted on your hard drive. Please check the http://www.online4u.be/pcdj/ site for more details.

Now for 7.3:
Understanding that with large collections ini files were not the best way to go dev decided to utilize XML with the newer versions of PCDJ. The way that XML loads it utilizes system memory. To have the large collection added to the PCDJ Recordcase you have to have a decent amount of RAM. Again with no issues 150,000 tracks both mp3 and mp3+g with 1GB of RAM.

If you have any other questions regarding PCDJ products please email Ted at pcdj dot com for any further assistance!
