Keep the database and/or player software organized. Do not worry about the location of the actual data on your hard drive.

You will rarely need to know where the song is located. Plus, most, if not all, player software has a button/keystroke/menu option, that will show the folder/file on the desktop and/or show the folder path to the song.

I agree. I've had more than 7000 songs in one folder and no problems. I know I've read that the more files you get you could have problems but I never have (and according to this you can have a lot more than 7K: http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=27253&DisplayTab=Article)

As far as using something other than your DJ software to play and finding your music. If you have them organized by Genre yes that would be easier/faster. However windows search will search ID3 tags, which has (or should have) genre information.

I personally have a filing system like I have my CD books organized. That way if I do want to look through them it's like I did when I played off CDs.

Most programs that organize for you, put the tracks from one album together in a folder, then all the albums from one artist in a folder, etc. Makes it nicely organized.

For the record, I have about 14,000 music files, in one folder on my external hard drive. But that folder is divided into a couple hundred folders. Many of them are divided into several folders.

In 10 months, I've never 'lost' a song except when I was manually moving stuff around and deleting duplicates, and OOPS...deleted the wrong copy.

Now I even use iTunes to help me find and delete duplicates. FYI: I have deleted about 1,000 duplicates. And those are TRUE duplicates - the same mix from different sources. I keep alternate mixes.

*nods* Nested folders, or subfolders, aren't a problem.

Spring cleaning must be a popular effort lately! I just did a "search and delete" for duplicates on my system. It's amazing how they can creep up on you! I must have gotten rid of a couple of hundred duplicates!

The only dupes I have on my hd are ones in my wedding formality folders (bouquet, garter etc) that also appear in my decade folders. At one time, I used to do shortcuts for mp3's to appear in multiple folders, but often the foldersync process would sometimes wipe out the shortcuts.

After using this for a while, I can now see a great benefit in filing by decade as some of you have done...but I didn't do it that way! I did mine by artist - set up like my CD case is...

Now I'd like to find an easy way to convert what I already have to decades. Any suggestions on how to do this efficiently? (without going through every single track and refiling! - yikes!) :dizzy:

Jack:

Do you have the year in the ID3 tag? There are a number of reference sites and books that list the release year. I even think the DJ Gold list had the release year.

If you don't have the release year in the tag info, then the only way to do is like I did. Take a couple weeks and do it manually.

I actually prefer the release year of the track itself vs. the year a greatest hits CD, for example, was released. If Rhiannon from Fleetwood Mac was a hit in 1976, then I want that in my 70's collection. If their greatest hits came out in 2000, I wouldn't have Rhiannon in my 2000's folder.

If you want, I could send you the database I use with DJ Intelligence via email. That way, for the time being, you'd know the release year and just drag them into the proper folder until you have time to edit the tags.

You could buy the BPM guide and look through that untill your database is up to date.

I reckon, you could also use it to guide you.
