Had 3 Gigs last night -- Pulled in many favors to handle -- Wife overbooked us -- But everybody else's gigs went off smoothly -- BUT MINE!!
Using a tower computer w/ OTS -- Main Speaker out created a unique whine/whistle -- not a ground loop -- rebooted and until the sound card 'initialized' the noise wasn't there -- OOPs!!!!! --
Thought this one through for a minute and realized that I could
reassign the rear speaker output (normally the Cue channel) to Air (OTSJD) and all was crystal clear.
Then -- We stack our speakers -- 15" on bottom, 12" on top w/ lights mounted on top speakers -- have done this set-up for 7 years -- One of the Top Speakers vibrates off the back of the 15 and comes crashing down on top of my relay pack! (of course this was a set-up where I couldn't see this corner of the room, so we never noticed it happening!) -- Lost an AMDJ Progressor, Relay Pack and somehow a AMDJ Mushroom died at the same time (still not sure how it's 'death' was tied in!) Speaker survived and dance never missed a beat.
Also, can now attest that a Hazer will set off a fire/smoke alarm -- I've set-up the Hazer and used it the same way in this room at least 10 times with nothing ever happening, but not last night! -- It was a homecoming dance and @ the Basketball game -- they blew a 250 amp 8" long fuse for all the main lights in the GYM -- I'm beginning to think that place was jinxed!
But the other 2 jobs went over w/o any problems -- so I guess I can could my lucky stars -- now today I've got to drive 108 miles and handle sound all day for a talent show and have another xmas Party to handle 6:30 till 2:00 am tonight -- Hope today goes well!
Xmas season is a busy one for us. We're always thankful for the work!
Hope your Xmas Parties are going smoothly! |

Blown fuses, dancing speakers, ground loops and fire alarms?
It's a bad night when any of those things happen... but all of them?
Glad you made it out alive! :) |

DJMC - I know what you mean!
We've got doubles both nights this weekend -- I'm still down 1 x wireless mic (Needs element replacement - not tied to last week's adventure) and we got COLD (single digits) -- so hoping that all the equipment in the trailer still 'works' tonight! Haven't had any blips before, but you never know! |

| Glad to hear that the repairs weren't any worse. You never know how things will go after a night like that one, right? Good luck with the doubles this weekend! |

| Cold is not so much an enemy to electronics or speakers, but MOISTURE is. Keep stuff dry and even in the cold, you should be fine. Slowly warm up the speakers by playing soft music for a while though. |

| I've been told that packing-up 'hot' into a cold environment isn't very healthy either (on equipment)-- we generally take 30 minutes to tear down /box up before we load -- guess that's enough time -- |

gotto watch those new fire alarms
they are practically invisible and light sensitive
so anything fog/haze smoke breaks the beam and voila
in comes the fire trucks
it has been making me paranoid about using a fogger (which you gotta have for the 3D effect of your lights)
and even more paranoid about pyro, even though the marshall lets you know, and goes over the plan
but on the tipping comment, nothing brings in the bucks like photos on the firetruck and the bridesmaids getting thier photos taken with the firemen |
