Before people flame me here, no I am not becoming an Ipod DJ.
Just wondering, as a digital DJ, would you consider using an Ipod as a backup in case of failure with your main system?

Not me. I'm so used to working from a computer that working from any other device is torture! I can get a three year old laptop, good enough for use as a backup, for the same cost as a new ipod and won't have to relearn everything.

Top capacity of an iPod is, what? 40 gig? My library currently exceeds 110 gigs.

Currently, I bring my entire CD library as a backup. Haven't used it since I made the switch this past May.

If I were going to pick and choose a sub-set of my library to put onto an iPod, I might as well create a few dozen CD-Rs of my most requested / played songs....which is something I AM planning on doing eventually so I can leave the big CD library behind.

Not an Ipod, but I do carry a spare Hard Drive for the Laptop -- i keep it updated (along w/3 other HD's). 12,000 songs on 42 gigs -- Thats enough to keep the Party rolling!

In all honestly you should consider adding some sort of IPOD sound reenforcement. I've already booked several "IPOD Solution" Packages. If you have an extra amp and some speakers collecting dust, you could put them to work for you.

As to the IPOD as a backup, yes. I am now carrying 4 Nanos and a Numark IDJ as another backup. I've got the cheese (line dances), timeless favorites like Love Shack, Shout, The Twist, and some Jive Bunny stuff on one IPOD and then I have the last three months of Promo Only, Funky Mix, and Ultimix on another. I also have a smattering of Country, Jazz, Rat Pack, and dinner and cocktail music spread across the two I just mentioned. The other two are backups. Hmmm, backup of the backup of the backup.

I also carry 3 laptops and six externals as backup.

I have one of the 30GB video iPods. I have one folder/genre set to wedding. It has about 100 big weddings songs including ceremony music. I play off a combination of CD/laptop so if I'm playing off CD then laptop is first back-up and vice versa. I bring the iPod as 3rd back-up but haven't needed to use it in over a year (I had the same set-up on my old iPod).

I couldn't do a whole event with it but I could use it for a song or two if I was in a pinch and was having problems with both my main music source and my back-up.

Jim reminded me. An iPod with a decent playlist, and a powered speaker, is all you need for cocktail hour. Add a little mixer and a wireless mike and you could easily do a ceremony.

I also frequently check the playlists for a few radio stations and set up playlists of that music. I sometimes listen to that in my car.

I also put my new PromoOnly stuff on the iPod and preview that in my car as well.

Yeah, the iPod is a wonderful tool. But as something to rely upon as a backup device? Fuggedaboudit!

Not as backup, but I do carry a small MP3 player (RCA Lyra) with songs I like to find quickly (for bouquet, garter, Booty Call, etc). I showed it to 2 photographers once and they could not believe all that sound came out of such a little thing! :hahaha:
