I think this is in the wrong forum. This should be in the I'm a Jack a$$ forum.

Could the mod please move it.

Actually, that new user posted the identical item, with different subjects, twice, in EVERY forum.

I deleted them all except the two here.

I don't have moderator status on this forum.

Nope. I don't have the power to delete users. But that doesn't matter. The person becomes a new user, makes these posts, then is usually never heard from again. If they were so inclined to check on their posts, and discover the deleted account, they could simply join again under a new name.

These sort of posts pop up more often than you know, but they usually only post one such message, and usually just in the general forum. And I often see it and delete it before too many other users see it.

In the past I asked CJ if there is anything that could be done, Although the phpBB software DOES give him a variety of options, whatever actions he could take to be proactive against a new spam member would also create a roadblock for new DJ members.

Most stuff like this is from a spam-bot, and not being posted by a live person. That's how they can post stuff to all the forums in a matter of a minute or two.

Yes, but I'm pretty certain the forum software is capable of limiting new posters to a post to every few seconds to prevent post flooding as they had done here. They may get a couple, but I doubt they load the entire forum as they did recently.

By restricting posts to the newest of member to say every 30-60 seconds, that would cut down this spam tremendously. As the member becomes known, and has posted 15-20 times, he/she could be bumped (promoted) to a new group with fewer flood restrictions.

I've done this myself on my site to prevent this, and it has been very successful for me.

I agree. That means that adding a simple "Enter the code from the box at the right to verify you're not a spam-bot" as part of creating a new account should prevent future issues. Let's all hope that whatever solution CJ comes up with is that easy.

Hi folks... sorry for the delay in taking care of this problem.

It's a shame that this kind of stuff happens on a well-intentioned website like this. (It's also a shame that it was not a legit porn site -- just a ploy to get the user to install a spyware-laden .exe file!   )

I've deleted the posts, and the users, and given DJ Teddy Bear the ability to take care of things in the Bug Reports forum as well. Thanks to DJ Teddy Bear, many offending posts in other forums were already taken care of.

Thanks to all of you for your patience on this issue -- now lets get back to Pro DJ stuff! 8)

Forum notes: there actually is a built-in time delay to block posters from posting hundreds of times electronically... but the real intention is to try and prevent multiple posts by regular posters -- you know, the dreaded "double post".

I agree with DJ Teddy Bear -- any attempt to block "bad" users typically just makes it harder for legitimate users to use the forum. If it continues to be a problem, we'll certainly take a look at how those particular users are abusing the system, and see what will slow them down...

Guess what? In the space of about 15 minutes, another new member posted twice in every forum the same porn link posting.

CJ -

I deleted all but one. That last one I moved to the moderators forum so you can see if you can do anything about it.

I'm telling ya...

Setting up a post flood filter is the only way to discourage these guys...

New members should not be allowed to post more than once per minute until they've proven themselves for say 10-20 posts, and then promoted to a new member group that eases this flood time to a smaller amount.

Does phpbb have a flood filter?

Jeff -
Yeah, you're probably right. But I get the feeling that this has become something of a back-burner project for CJ. I don't see him posting here as much as he used to.

ME on the other hand, I have no life. So I don't mind stopping by every couple hours to check up on things.

Toward that end...

CJ:
We got hit again. About an hour ago, a new member, in the space of less than 10 mintes, posted over 15 porn posts.

Isn't there some type of filter that would discourage this, (if not emilinate it) while not hurting new and regular users? For example, a limit of one post every 3 minutes. Certainly even regular users with a lot to say would have trouble typing thier thoughts that fast, and it would cut the porn posts down to a single posting. Still a problem, but nowhere near the way it is currently.

I see you understand the need for this filtering Teddy!

I've also seen another method... posting with confirmation images much like you do for forum registrations, but with 2 words with a space between...(Facebook).

Unfortunately, this would be more inconvenient than waiting it out I'd think, and eventually, the bots will be able to get by both methods. Just a matter of time before they read the message that there is a time limit, and return after that limit to post an additional spam.

Some bots can currently read the single word images and get themselves registered now.
