Shorten the Registration Process

Postby srothkin » Mon Jul 19, 2004 10:13 am

I think it would be easier/more convenient to have all the questions on one page instead of multiple pages.

Hi Steve,

You bring up a great point.

Due to the nature of the error checking we perform, some pages are not shown to a registrant depending on their answer provided on a previous page.

However: You're right... 6 pages may be too many.

We'll look at combining some of the information (Name/address/phone/etc.) onto one page where possible, and then perhaps show the optional pages after that if necessary...

I think we should be able to get it down to 3 or 4 pages max!

I just signed up and did not find the multiple pages to be annoying or time consuming. You probably could condense some of it however I think it is nice to have the separated areas....not so overwhelming!

Obviously, it wasn't a long enough process to keep Smorseraigree & Fleemyduene
out. :2gunsfiring_v1:

Yeah, well, I try to keep on top of it.

Lately, the spammers post more than the active members. Oy....

Totally understand that Dave.

I ban more users than I accept at my forums before their first post simply because they don't follow policy when registering.

I still get a couple that do sneak through my net however.

The registration process is only long for DJs wanting to be listed in the DJGold search engine.

I guess I need to make it harder for just anyone to access the forums. I've been deleting a lot of users and posts recently. It seems like it's the new cool thing for hackers to do...

Me too.

Have you been monitoring the Moderator Logs? I've got a lot of recent deletions and a few banned users in there.

Note: You'll also see one banned IP, along with an un-ban the next day. I thought the IP address shown was the user's IP. It turned out to be MY IP. Yesterday, I couldn't access from work. LOL.

Yes, I permanently delete users & their posts almost every day now. I use the "whois" ip lookup to see where the ip is originating from. If it's from overseas, I ban it. If it's from the USA, I just ban the user. I don't ban USA ip's because every time someone logs in, it's usually from a different ip, so if I ban a bad user one day, a good user could be blocked the next day. It's a pain... hopefully an upgrade that's coming for this board soon will help with some of the issues.

Got it. OK. I'll leave the IP ban decisions up to you.

For what it's worth, at work, we have a static IP address. That's what when I tried to get on the next day, I got snagged by the ban.

Most people have dynamic IPs, so there's no easy fix, unless there's a Cookie solution. That's probably true for overseas too, but who cares? Go ahead and ban the guy's neighbors if they're from overseas. LOL.
