Popular songs from India?

Postby jbrown157 » Thu Dec 07, 2006 2:03 pm

I have a holiday party (corporate) coming up. The owners of the company and many of the employees are Indian. I'd like to be able to play some familiar music for them but I haven't a clue as to what to play. I have exactly ONE track in my library that I would classify as being Indian ("Beware of the Boys" - Punjabi MC). Suggestions anyone? India is a huge and diverse country and I have no idea where to start. :paranoid: I am specifically looking for individual tracks that I can download - no time to order a cd... Thanks

Why not ask the client?

---

A buddy of mine told me a story that he was set to DJ a wedding reception. The Indian band for cocktail hour was a no-show. The venue manager asked him if he had any Indian music to play. My buddy said no, what kind of music is that? The manager said "It sounds like screeching cats."

My buddy played some instrumental guitar music, and pitched it up to about +150% and the client was happy.

Thanks for the reply TB. Actually I did ask the client. The contact I have with the company - the person who hired me (not an Indian) said she would ask some of the Indian employees to bring along some CDs for me to play. That's fine, except that I'll have no idea what they are or what to mix them with. I am hoping to come up with a few tracks on my own that I can simply mix in with my regular sets. I have found a couple by looking at the India radio charts and then searching for downloads on Itunes. Here's what I've found so far that sound good to me;

"Let the Music Play" - Shamur
"Aashiqui Meri" (Remix) = 36 China Town

But then again - what kind of judge of Indian music am I? I can't speak the language. I only know whether I like how it sounds or not... Thanks for the guitar idea... but I think I'll try something else! :hahaha:

It is interesting to note that at least half of the "Indian" top twenty are US artists. Who'da thunk it?

I just recently did an event with mostly Indian music. Get some Desi Madman remixes, 36 Chinatown, Dhoom, Tom * & Harry, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (especially "Where's the Party Tonight"), Hindi ("Greatest Dance Mix 3"), Bluffmaster,

I could give more, but do you have time to find these?

You might consider inviting people to bring their own CDs. I like indian dance music, but I don't think that it is worth adding it to my collection. Especially since I have no idea what they are saying. Ya gotta love Punjabi DJ though :)

The party was a big success. I went in with only six Hindi tracks and played 'em all. They were sure a dancing crowd. I now have an idea of what to look for so I can add some additionals. It was great to see the look on their faces when they heard this music being played. It's really fun music and everyone enjoyed dancing to it . The client was very pleased and wants us back for next years party.

Some of the tracks I have do, but for the most part its kind of like techno dance remixes of reggaeton.

The ones I chose were actually quite good. I sorted through quite a few and downloaded some that I deemed "dancable". The Indian guests loved them. They knew these songs, sang along and danced like crazy. I wish that I had found a few more. It was cool to see them enjoying what I had picked out - they really seemed appreciative. They especially liked Punjabi music. A couple of the tracks were in "Hinglish" (part hindu and part english. In all, it was very interesting and educational.

Bhangra is another type of Indian music I believe. My friend is of Indian descent and dances at weddings, etc.
She has some rare songs on tape, I need to burn them onto CD. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions about what? Transferring cassette to CD?

Do a search for converting vinyl to MP3. Same process. You plug your mixer's output into your computer's audio in and record the audio. Then, instead of converting to MP3, burn it.
