If You Had Just 30 Minutes...

Many DJ's are "switching up" to computers as the new way to DJ. They provide near-instant access to large song lists and can be integrated to control video and DMX lighting.

If you had just 30 minutes to learn something new or ask a pressing question about Computerized Performance Systems (CPS) / Computer DJing, what is that one burning desire to know?

Just curious what everyone would pick... kinda like those threads like, if you were on a desert island, what three items would you want to have with you and so on.

Besides performing with my CPS, what are other possible uses that could increase my revenue?

A blonde, a brunette and a redhead.

But seriously...

That's too broad of a question. Or at least too broad for someone who already has and is happy with thier choice of CPS.

Confirmed dates / locations:

Mobile Beat Summer Expo
Cromwell, CT
June 26 - 28, 2006

CPADJN Summer Picnic
Columbia, PA
August 20, 2006

Computer DJ Summit
Tampa, FL
October 8-10, 2006

There are a few other dates / locations in the works, but nothing definite at this time. If you are part of a networking group or a local chapter of the ADJA, we may be able to work something out as scheduling permits.

Dokia,

Thank you, excellent idea! Keep 'em coming.

Did you pick that date?

I know what I'm doing that date. I bet a lot of guys are doing the same thing: Heading to A.C. ... Jumping in the Ocean ... Throwing the dice ...

Greets Teddy,

Yes, actually I did pick that date. Some folks expressed interest in attending the picnic if it fell within a few days of the expo. We couldn't get the date we wanted last year, but we did get the facility and the date this year. If it works out well, great. If not, we will go back to keeping the date away from the dates for DJ Times.

After the picnic, a small group of us will be making a bee-line for AC.

I concurr. I too have always wanted to be able to use the computer for lighting control instead of a user unfriendly control box that takes forever to program sequences.

I hear that Virtual DJ has DMX control capabilities programmed right into the software. And if I remember correctly, there are additional plugins or preprogrammed sequences availoable for download too.

Is that a start?

I would love to see many of the computer programs for light control in action. I would love to be able to actually control my lights instead of turning them loose in stand alone mode.

Show me where the 'ANY' key is so I can press it and continue!

Haven't gone the digital/CPS route just yet but there was one thing brought up by a few folks that had me wondering. Lossless format, which programs support these audio files?

I would have to say overview comparisons on not just lighting but VJ and karaoke as well. I'm sure some are easier than others, some have better features, etc.

Dan, we really need to get together sometime. I use computers for DJing and for Karaoke, once you see how easy it is and hear how good it sounds you will be ready to move into the computer world.

We've talked about getting together in the past, I have some time off in July and August let's see if we can find a time to get together????

Jamie, that's sounds good. I'm sending you my schedule.

I'm loading trailer up for Fri/Sat/Sun today. It's been so hot that I've ripped 3 CDs while getting rehydrated. Haven't had a chance to work on going digital lately but we're up to 29K songs right now.

Does it have DMX lighting capabilities and/or video capabilities, and would it bog the PC down so much to the point of crashing? (would be my question)

So many of the new "DMX lighting control" modules being built into DJ programs these days are proprietary and can't be used with any other program.

This benefits the company selling the program (maybe?) but doesn't benefit the DJ.

What if a DJ wants to switch over to another program?
Does he have to re-write all of his lighting programs???

_____________

To answer this thread's original question:
If you had just 30 minutes to learn something new or ask a pressing question about Computerized Performance Systems (CPS) / Computer DJing, what is that one burning desire to know?

What are DJ Program creators doing to improve the ability of their program to communicate & control REAL DMX programs such as:

Martin LightJockey
Chauvet ShowExpress
Elation CompuWare
(and others...)
__________________________

Right now, I only know of one DJ program that can communicate with any of these DMX programs (via MIDI): DJPower.

I'd really like to see other programs use similar methods to allow DJs to use real DMX programs to create their light shows, and then use the DJ music/video programs to trigger them.

Yep, that's what I'm talking about. I want a computer program that controls DMX fixtures and can run in "auto" mode, triggering off the music that's being played. The program should allow one to enter fixture information, whether DMX channel information of each is stored in a look-up table or the ability to set what channels control which movement type, then once set, an auto-run sequence will drive the lights in an appropriate manner, and you can select from a few variations of sequences while running for when you're playing a slow song or up beat song or what ever else.
