What is your most embarassing Wedding DJ moment ever???

Postby michigandj » Tue Sep 06, 2005 3:35 am

Well, I have a few - but the one that sticks out the most is...

We were doing an upper class Russian Wedding Reception at the Walloon Country Club, and everyone there was filthy rich, dry humored, broken English, and - well, you know what I mean - it was a tough crowd to start. Anyway, the Bride's Father approached our booth - Roger and I had just started dinner music. His name was Richard S(confident)y - and his request was distinguishedly delivered to us in a very polite, yet firm manner. He asked that when we announced his name for the Father / Daughter dance, that we announce him as D**k, instead of Richard (as he was commonly refered to D**k by all of his guests). This was a simple, and understandable request - and without thinking I said four words that I would have paid a million dollars to take back - but couldn't...

   "So you prefer D**k?"

Awkwardness filled the room, and time stood still for what seemed like a year. Roger had to turn around and fake getting into our gear bag just to conceal his abrupt, obvious reaction to my unwitting reply. :sulkoff:
I felt like every muscle in my body was being used to hold my body still - and prevent the eruption of laughter that poured out like lava when he walked away. But the guy cleared his throat, adjusted his eyebrows in an angry manner - and said...why...yes, I do. That was it! I had to turn around, and I felt like I was going to die before I could spin around and utter an expressionless "No problem sir." Well I managed - and we both laugh to this day at my personal "most embarassing moment" - :hahaha:

OK NOW - LET'S HEAR EM!!!

*groans* Man, that was ugly! :hahaha:

My personal worst was early in my career. The groom's family name was pronounced "cat-a-LAH-no". No problem, except my sister's name is pronounced "cat-a-LEE-no", and my tongue was too used to that. You got it - I proceeded to mis-pronounce the names for half of the wedding party during the introduction, including the parents of the groom, groomsmen (brothers), best man (also a brother), etc. A kind-hearted guest caught my attention by walking up to the dj area and discretely pointing out my error, just in time to prevent me from introducing the BRIDE & GROOM by the wrong name!

Later I apologized profusely and explained about my sister's name, and they laughed at me and told me not to worry about it. Talk about embarrassing! Needless to say, I'm VERY careful about preventing such an event from happening again.

When I first went digital, their first dance went awry due to my inexperience with my new system. Didn't know what to do, so I rebooted the whole computer, which caused a weird noise through the whole system. And of course, this was a bride who was looking for a very low key event and didn't want to be in the spotlight at all. So I guess that didn't work out for her. She was pi$$ed, I'm sure, but didn't say anything else to me the rest of the night.

OK,

" I Wanna Grow Old With You" from Adam Sandler was the B&G song. They asked if I would cut out the verbal intro (Billy Idol) and I said I would. My sound editor would not mix down from MP3 to MP3. So it sent it as a .wav file. THAT .wav file was the correct version. Can you guess where I'm going? The groom came up to me right before I intro'ed the song and asked if I fixed it? "Yep, I did, I'm your man".....shiat. I hit it and there is Billy Idol...
YIKES....

Mine was ,the B&G wanted a sound track from --Beautyand the beast. by Celine Dion
So I played it for there 1st dance..

I was told at tip time that I play the wrong 1st dance and here is 10$ tip.
I ask them I played the Beautyand the beast. by Celine Dion ,just as you ask me to.
She said it was the wrong song and it should of been Beautyand the beast by BRYSON/DION.

I handed back the 10$ and told her that wasnt the song you asked for and to next time,, know what your asking for or ask me..

In my wedding planner it is in BIG font ..NO MOVIE SOUND TRACKS>
when I call her and told her that .she asked if I could get it. I said ,,,ok. and then in 2 days I called her (she sounded pi$$y) and told her that there are 3 songs by dion and 2 of them are with BRYSON/DION
I asked witch one did you want , I was told JUST DION!!!!!and it was like she was pi$$y, for me asking her..

SO now I will never Play a sound track ,,,,unless they have it on a CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is another one I loved.......

I had a mom and ther bride come over ,,I booked them ..
She asked me if I could play a CD she had?(as in one) I asked her ,, what is it and I will fit them in to the night.
she said that it was music from all over the world. and that she will give me the cd and then thank me.
COOL :)

2 day before the wedding I got a call from her, asking if she could drop off the CD (as in 1 cd )LOL
Well it was 20 CD's and a small book she put togetther
I didnt let it get me mad ,as I would try to fit them in the night of music..

Then when the night started after dinner, the B&G came up and said ......

ONLY PLAY THE CD"S WE GAVE YOU.
WOW What a Bit**
so I looked at the list (a wordDoc.) and it was all listed in cd# track# and is the song was fast or slow. and it went (listed)
fast
fast mid,
mid
slow
slow
fast
fast
Well you get where I am going ..
so I just followed the list. (the way she had it)

and the end of the night ,the B&G came up to us ,thanked us for a great night. handed me 150$$$
. I said thank you ,and we had a great time.

OK sounds good right?????

5 days later I called her. I told her we had a great time. I thanked her. and I asked if she could send us a letter of refferance.

SHE SAID NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
she told me i f I was going to play her music in order ,she could of had a monkey do that and she wasnt happy.
she went on to say the ---
cake sucked
the food wasnt served on time..and was cold
the waiter were rude...
and her dress didnt fit her right ,

ALL i DID WAS SAY ..... ok
thank you
and hung up

I can't come up with any stories like these.......because I NEVER SCREW UP.......lol (J/K).

Actually, there was 1x (about 18 years ago) where I showed up w/o the First Dance song (it was an obscure track off a Tower Of Power CD).

Thank goodness I've never done anything that stupid since then!!!

Digital Scott -
Both of those stories belong in a 'Bridezilla' thread. Not your fault, and nothing to be embarrased about.

My worst story is from the first wedding I did solo, 22 years ago. I had next to zero training. There were five people in the bridal party had the same difficult last name. No training meant I didn't realize that I should line up the party and check the names myself. Instead the Matre D lined them up and I pronounced the name five different ways, each time getting a chorus of yells from the crowd for the correct way to say it. Needles to say, with everyone shouting it at once, I wasn't able to figure it out.

Oh, well. Live and learn.

I have it writen in the planner, Please no last names.....
I never say last names. NEVER....
The only last name I will say is the B&G's

The easy was out is that 1st I list it on the planner NLN
and 2nd --- if they ask to do last names,, me I just tell then. I dont like to say last name , as it stops the flow of the Grand ent's.
Then I say . do you want it to flow and be great or do you want it to ,,not flow????
The answer is alway the same... we want it to flow. 8)

Back when I was using Mini Disc, I put in the wrong MD (the llittle spine label was hard to see.) Qued up the B&G's first dance, announce Mister and Misses So-and-so and proceeded to play "give me one reason- Tracy Chapman".
I Had "give me one reason to stay here" before I hit the pause/play button. The Bride looks over and say's "That's not our song"!
I quickly insert the right MD while making some remark about how wonderful technology is (blaming the equipment of course, all the while turning many shades of red)
Qued the song and remarked, Lets try this one (jokingly)
The rest of the night went off without a hitch.
I've probably had a few more, this is just the one that stands out at the moment.

Nothing really serious, but I was doing a reception in an old barn turned banquet hall. I had never been there before and the floors were very bouncy. I was using my back-up cd player (a Pyle-Pro) that skipped all over the place whenever anyone started jumping around on the dance floor. After a while, I think the dancers were intentionally amusing themselves by making the Cds skip. I made it through the night albeit embarrassed. That Pyle-Pro? It's now serving me well... as a boat anchor! Now I only use anti-shock Numarks. No more skips.

You know, I've never even thought about that! That is GREAT! It removes a potentially BIG stumbling block. I think I'm going to steal that idea!

In my final meeting with them, if we are doing it together online at a hot spot, I spell the last names out pho-net-ick-lee in my DJ Intelligence planner. LOL.

Actually, the no last names idea sounds more personable to me. I like it too!

I have a few.... not really MY screw ups but...

We had a Wedding we did that EVERYTHING changed (the pre-planning) the very last minute! Literally! We had everything arranged for the intros (Wedding party) when they showed up (1 hour late) we were rushing to get every thing re-done because the "pairing up" had changed of the groomsmen and bridesmaids because of a death that happen earlier that day they we weren't aware of.. we rushed around to got the intro list done, done the into and then the Bride and Groom into... All is good EXCEPT they decided to do the Toast right after they entered BEFORE the dinner.. Well, they had forget to tell me WHO would be doing the Toasts now that THAT person was not there..

Sooooo... it was time to do the toast and I am told AS I get on the mic (by my wife) that "he" was not doing the Toast because he was not here... The mic is ON and I'm sorta stumbling because I had already got everyones attention announcing the Toasts would be next by............ .. so, what do I say??? (now you got to realize this all took place in a matter of a few seconds) sooo, without hesitation from my initial Toast introduction I say "Would the TOASTERS please come to the DJ booth" ... In this second, silence took over the room from what once was a second ago a light "rumble" of talking and ALL heads turned toward me!! Then someone shouted and said "how about a BLENDER?" and I came back with "nope, has to be a toaster, blenders are next"

The WHOLE room filled with laughter... the ones that were going to do the toasts finally came up to do the toast and all was good the rest of the night.. We even got a $100.00 tip after the show from the Brides father... AND so far we have done 4 gigs off that gig and have 2 still booked from that show...

This ones not a Wedding but WAS my most embarrassing moments...

The first year I started my business, we had to do a New Years party here in Joplin... Well, Dee was working at the radio station so I was on my own on this one... The show went good, we had about 30 minutes left in the show and a lady came up to me and wanted me to dance with her. She INSISTED that I dance with her so, to keep on the good side of all the guests, I did for one song, a fast song!

Now... This is the SAME lady that about an hour before was on the dance floor with her hubby.. watching them dance in front of the DJ table was more like watching a porn movie! Lets just say that when they danced, he took her bra off with his teeth through the front of her long black dress for starters.. then he would pull up on her dress whiles they danced.. and I mean PULLED UP.. UM.. lets just say silky smooth!

OK, the show (my DJ show, LOL) was over and getting things packed up and this lady comes over and asked for a pic with the DJ.. I thought, sure, not a problem... we get on the dance floor, her Hubby with the camera, and I do the normal pose. Ya know, one arm around them and smiling... Well, they (she) had other plans... the HUBBY says "READY?" I said yep, at that moment she grabs my, ummmm , the area between my hip bones... yea, you get the picture.. (no punn intended.. LOL) and he snaps the picture!!! with her (what LOOKS like) holding my you-know-what!!

The Hubby got a laugh out of it, I was embarrassed as hell, and they went on about their drinking and I finished packing...

Oh, I told Dee about what happened when I went to the radio station afterward and she laughed her arse off.. LOL

At least with Hubby as her accomplice, you didn't have to worry about some guy bursting into the room with "That's my wife!"

Face it, Dave - you're just too charming for the women to be able to control themselves! :D

LOL... Actually this last Saturday I had a DeJaVo moment!! Dee went outside to take a little break and this lady (drunk on her arse) came up and grabbed me by the arm and said "DANCE WITH ME DJ ! !" I tried to get out of it but it didn't work, so, I went out to the dance floor and danced to AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long ... so, on the dance floor was me and this lady and two other girls dancing together, that's it! Talk about ALL EYES ON THE DANCE FLOOR!! LOL... Then as this song was ending, the next song started. I tried to get away, but it didn't happen... All THREE girls grabbed me and put me in the (front to back - front to back line!!) Ya know, one girl in front of me and two girls behind me!!! This song was Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me .... :hahaha:

The Bride and Groom got a kick out of it and one of the girls dancing was the one that booked us for April of next year for HER wedding, I don't know where her other half was at this time while she was doin' Da Humpty Hump on my back-side... LOL.... My wife got a kick out this one too..
